Cuba - Part 3

Yes, I realize I have been taking forever and day to finish posting about my trip to Cuba but I'm getting there.
Slowly but surely.

~12/26/2011~

We started the day by visiting Lenin Park which is basically an amusement fair. Julito has so much fun riding the roller coasters. I'm not a fan of fair rides so I only rode the bumper cars. That way, Julito had someone to crash in to because since it was a Monday, the park was pretty empty. He was basically the only kid in every single ride.

It was very hot but the occasional breeze made it feel a little better. I did, however, have my first "interesting" experience in a Cuban restroom. When I went to the restroom, not only did I have to use the men's restroom but there was no toilet paper!!! I guess my spoiled American self thought toilet paper would be a given but nope! Not in Cuba. My mom had actually told me to take a roll of toilet paper in my purse but it didn't fit so I had left it behind. I guess mommies do know best! Thankfully, my mom had one napkin that my sister and I split in half.

Later on, I wanted to buy ice cream because of how hot it was! But they only sold ice cream cups and had no spoons. "/ I ended up finding a place that was selling ice cream bars for 25 cents so we bought those instead. I noticed at this point that they also never give napkins. Even in the homes, it isn't normal to use napkins while eating. That was a little difficult for me to get used to because I always need a napkin with me when eating. LOL.

After the fair, we went to a botanical garden where they have trees and plants from all over the world. It was very pretty.

After the tour, we went to a restaurant that was located in the gardens. It was amazing... the food was so good and we all ate (five of us) for $32!! And everyone (except me lol) ate steak. I ate moros, malanga, platanitos maduros, and a fresh squeezed orange juice that was absolutely delicious.

At around 7pm, we headed towards the John Lennon park so that I could see the statue of John Lennon that I had heard about before and really wanted to see. It was pretty cool but apparently, people keep stealing his glasses so they are removed at nighttime. (strange lol). On the floor, in front of the statue, it reads (in Spanish), "You may say I'm a dreamer but I'm not the only one."

Right down the street from the park, there's a place called "Submarino Amarillo" (Translation: Yellow Submarine). It's a pretty awesome all Beatle's-themed bar/club. It was closed when we went but we knew we would be heading back for sure before my return back home. It was also pretty cool that I was wearing a Yellow Submarine t-shirt that night (pure coincidence!)

After taking a few photos of the club, we headed over to the canon celebration/tradition that is held every night at 9pm (and that we missed the night before). This time, we made it with plenty of time and were actually able to see the whole thing. When you walk in, you walk by an artisan market and there, I bought two small Cuban paintings. When we reached the top, we were able to see an absolutely amazing view of the city. Then, we saw the canon celebration. It was very nice and interesting but I'm not going to lie, I almost literally crapped my pants when the canon went off. We were so close to it and it was sooooo loud. It actually hurt my ears.

Overall, it was a pretty eventful (and extremely tiring) day. But it was SO much fun! <3
